Coenobite

"...had withdrawn into the solitude in which prophetic existences often end until it pleases God to call back the cenobite* (sic) or ascetic whose superhuman task is done.

* On Ruskin, by Marcel Proust, printed in the third penguin great ideas series (green), the cenobite is spelled thus. However, the online OED, although referring to that spelling, although corrects it to that which is also the title of this post.
